The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is a DC-DC charger designed to recharge a service battery from an alternator while driving. It can be used in vehicles with both conventional alternators and modern vehicles with smart alternators.

The non-isolated version uses a common negative pole for both the starter and service batteries, which corresponds to the common wiring in camper vans and camper conversions.

Thanks to built-in Bluetooth, the charger can be configured and monitored via the VictronConnect app.

Main advantages

  • 30 A charging current
  • suitable for both conventional and smart alternators
  • suitable for LiFePO4 and lead-acid batteries
  • three-stage adaptive charging algorithm
  • built-in Bluetooth
  • configuration via VictronConnect
  • automatic engine run detection
  • can be used as an adjustable power supply
  • overheating protection
  • short circuit protection
  • possibility of parallel connection of multiple units

For conventional and smart alternators

In modern vehicles, a smart alternator does not behave in the same way as a conventional alternator with a stable charging voltage. Its output voltage can vary significantly during driving, and in certain situations, charging may be limited or completely interrupted.

The Orion-Tr Smart ensures controlled charging of the service battery even in these systems.

The charger can be set to start charging only when the engine is running. Detection values can be adjusted according to the specific vehicle, or charging can be controlled by an external signal.

Adaptive three-stage charging

The Orion-Tr Smart uses a three-stage charging algorithm that adjusts the charging process according to the battery's state.

For a lightly discharged battery, it does not unnecessarily prolong the absorption phase, while for a more discharged battery, it can prolong it to ensure proper charging.

Also suitable for LiFePO4

Controlled DC-DC charging is particularly important when using LiFePO4 service batteries. These can draw a high current when directly connected to an alternator.

The Orion-Tr Smart controls the charging current and simultaneously provides the battery with the correct charging profile.

Bluetooth and VictronConnect

Bluetooth is integrated into the device, so there is no need to purchase an additional communication module.

In the VictronConnect app, the charger can be configured, its operation monitored, and parameters adjusted according to the specific battery and electrical installation.

Parallel connection

If higher charging power is required, multiple Orion-Tr Smart units can be connected in parallel.

Thermal protection

The Orion-Tr Smart monitors its own operating temperature and automatically limits power if necessary to prevent damage to the device.

It provides full power up to an ambient temperature of 40 °C and can operate up to 55 °C.

Isolated or non-isolated version?

In the non-isolated Orion-Tr Smart, the input and output sides use a common negative pole. This is suitable for common automotive installations where both starter and service batteries are connected to the vehicle's common ground.

The isolated version has galvanically separated input and output electrical circuits and is used where a specific electrical installation requires it.

For most conventional camper conversions with a common vehicle ground, the non-isolated version is used.
